Where It All Started

Founder

It wasn't some grand business plan, honestly. Just a love for these mountains and too many weekends spent in overpriced, underwhelming lodges.

Back in '08, my partner Elena and I were sitting in yet another cramped hotel room with a "mountain view" that was basically a parking lot. We'd just spent the day skiing some of the best powder Whistler had seen in years, and we couldn't help thinking - why does the accommodation always feel like an afterthought?

That conversation turned into sketches on napkins, which turned into late nights poring over architectural plans. We wanted to build something that felt like it belonged up here - not just another building dropped onto the mountainside, but a place that worked with the landscape.

The name "Ignivar" came from an old hiking map we found at a local antique shop. It marked a forgotten trail that used to run right through where our property sits now. Seemed fitting - we were rediscovering something special that'd been here all along.

We broke ground in 2010 with a small crew and big dreams. Elena handled the interior design while I worked with local contractors who actually knew what they were doing (unlike me, apparently). There were setbacks - the first winter delayed construction by four months, and we went way over budget. But we stuck with it.

When we finally opened in 2012, we had twelve rooms and a staff of eight. Now we've grown to what you see today, but we've kept that original vision - a place where the experience matches the incredible setting around us.

Every guest who walks through our doors is part of continuing that story. We're just glad you're here to write it with us.

Our Journey

2008
The Spark

That fateful ski trip where Marcus and Elena decided there had to be a better way. Napkin sketches turned into real blueprints.

2010
Breaking Ground

Construction began in spring. Local crews, sustainable materials, and a whole lot of optimism. That first winter taught us some hard lessons.

2012
Grand Opening

Twelve rooms, eight staff members, and our first guests. The Hendersons from Calgary - they still come back every winter.

2015
The Spa Opens

Added our full-service wellness center. Turns out après-ski massages are pretty popular - who knew?

2017
Going Vertical

Expanded with the west wing and added our rooftop bar. Best sunset views in Whistler, if we do say so ourselves.

2019
Ski-In Access

Finally got the permits for direct slope access. Game changer for our winter guests - no more shuttle buses at 7 AM.

2021
Sustainable Shift

Completed our solar installation and geothermal heating system. We're now running on 80% renewable energy.

2023
Award Recognition

Named Best Mountain Resort in Western Canada by Travel & Leisure. Still kinda surreal, honestly.

2025
Today & Tomorrow

We're still here, still improving, still learning. Currently planning a new adventure center for 2026. The journey continues.

Our Team

The People Behind the Place

We've got about 45 people on our team now, and honestly, they're what makes this place work. From the front desk crew who remember your coffee order to the housekeeping staff who somehow make beds look like clouds, everyone here actually gives a damn.

Most of our team has been with us for years. Chef Antoine's been running the kitchen since 2013, and Maria at the spa has loyal clients who book appointments a year in advance. We don't do the high-turnover thing - we'd rather invest in people who invest in us.

If you've stayed with us before, you probably know what we're talking about. If you haven't yet, well, you'll see.
